PLC-Based Drilling Controls
Advanced PLC-based implementation coordinated around the drilling application.

Drilling Automation
DPES develops drilling automation and control systems around the equipment, operating sequence, instrumentation, controls, communications, and electrical requirements of the rig. From automated drilling controls to mud-system instrumentation and integrated electrical systems, each solution is engineered around the actual drilling operation.

Application Purpose
Drilling automation requires multiple systems to operate together under demanding operating conditions. Controls, instrumentation, drives, operator interfaces, communications, alarms, historical information, and electrical equipment can all become part of the overall control architecture.
DPES brings these disciplines together around the drilling process instead of treating them as independent subsystems.
Automated Drilling Controls
DPES automated drilling controls bring drilling parameters, equipment control, operator interaction, communications, and operating information into a coordinated PLC-based control environment.
Advanced PLC-based implementation coordinated around the drilling application.
Rate-of-penetration and weight-on-bit controls within the automated drilling environment.
Operator interaction with drilling controls and operating information through the control environment.
Communication networks configured around customer and equipment requirements.
Supported remote connections and web access to the drill site.
User alarms, data archiving, history logs, and report generation.
Process Visibility
The DPES Mud Instrumentation Unit is a PLC-based standalone unit that can also integrate into an overall rig automation system. It provides HMI controls for remote operation of supported mud-system pumps and motors, an overview of levels in the solids-control system, user alarms, and report generation.

Related DPES Capabilities
Drilling control systems frequently depend on the interaction between automation controls and the underlying electrical equipment. DPES can coordinate these disciplines when they are part of the same drilling application.
Connected Operations
The current DPES drilling controls support industrial communication networks, remote connections, remote web access, alarms, archived information, history, and reporting as project requirements call for them.
Profibus, Profinet, Modbus, RS-232, and RS-485 communications configured to customer requirements.
Remote connection through supported fiber-optic or satellite infrastructure.
Supported web access to the drill site for appropriate remote visibility.
Operating alarms presented through the drilling control environment.
Archived operating information and history logs where included in the control system.
Report generation based on information available to the approved drilling controls.
